William - First Experience in the Dark

My name is William, I am 27 years old, I am Belgian and I don’t have any sight difficulties. It was my first experience of this kind.

This dinner in the dark was a very pleasant and surprising discovery for me. I was in charge of the bar, together with Carmen, a blind person, who helped me throughout the evening. Without her, I don’t think that I would have managed to cope with it all. An hour before the event, I was the one who guided Carmen, explaining where to set the tables when we were preparing the place. However, once we were in the dark, it was her who guided me. I was very impressed on how easily she could move around. This experience helped me to really understand visually impaired people’s way of life.

The atmosphere during the dinner was another surprise for me. People were not at all shy and talked a lot to each other. At a certain point, they even refused to have the light back on!

I realized that the fact that people could not see contributed to the beauty of the atmosphere, because they needed to help each other to pass their plates or drinks.

The event showed me that sometimes sight can be an obstacle when it comes to human relations, an obstacle that blind or visually impaired people do not encounter.
